Explore the Enchanting Atlas Mountains on a 6-Day Hike

Embark on a remarkable 6-day journey through the mesmerizing Atlas Mountains, featuring vibrant Berber villages, awe-inspiring mountain passes, and the crowning jewel, Mount Toubkal, standing tall at 4,167 meters. This adventure is an immersion in the scenic beauty of North Africa’s highest peak and the surrounding landscapes.

Day 1: Marrakech – Imi-oughled – Imsker Your journey commences with a pick-up in Marrakech, followed by a 50-kilometer drive to Imi-oughlad. Here, you’ll meet your mule bearers and cooks. After loading up the mules, your trek begins in the valley of Imenane, ascending gradually through Tizi n Lbour and descending to the village of Imeskar for lunch. Following lunch, you’ll continue your trek through a valley adorned with towering walnut trees, passing through Tinghar and Tidili before reaching Gliz.

Day 2: Imsker – Oukaimeden – Tizi n Addi – Tachdirth A short ascent through juniper forests takes you to the Tizi-n-Oukaimden pass, offering breathtaking views of the Ousrtik River and distant peaks of the Toubkal Massif. Afterward, you’ll traverse the Okaimden 3700m pass and have lunch near Ski, the highest station in North Africa. Beyond the pass, you’ll descend to the picturesque High Atlas Valley of Tachdirth, with stunning vistas of mountains and valleys. The day ends in Tachdirth at an elevation of 1900 meters.

Day 3: Tachdirth – Tamgist – Ikis – Tizi n Ougersiwal – Matat Your journey continues through the Assif Imnane valley, weaving through various Berber communities and ascending to the Tizi n’Aguersiwal at 2000m. After crossing the pass, you’ll descend on winding mule tracks to Aguersiwal for lunch. Following lunch, you’ll ascend to Matat’s valley, where you’ll spend the night.

Day 4: Matat – Tizi Oudit – Azib Tamsoult (2300m) Leaving Matat, you’ll trek for six hours, transitioning from the Matat Valley to the Azzadene Valley. Along the way, you’ll pass through Tizi Oudit at 2,250m, Ait Aissa Village, Tizi Oussem Village, and Azib n’Tamsoult. The day concludes with an overnight stay at the Azib n Tamsoult mountain shelter, situated at an altitude of 2300 meters.

Day 5: Azib Tamsoult – Tizi Aglzim (3560m) – Refuge Toubkal (3207m) The day’s challenge takes you from the Azzadene Valley over the Ighouliden waterfalls and across the 3,560-meter-high Aguelzim Mountain pass. Lunch will be a well-deserved treat with spectacular Atlas Mountain views. You’ll spend the night at the Toubkal Refuge (Niltner Hut), sharing accommodation with fellow trekkers preparing for the Toubkal summit ascent.

Day 6: Refuge Toubkal (3207m) – Toubkal Summit (4167m) – Imlil – Marrakech An early start at 4:00 am sets you on your ascent to Toubkal’s summit, standing at 4,167 meters. Enjoy awe-inspiring vistas of the Atlas Mountains and, if the skies are clear, the Sahara Desert. The descent is lengthy, taking you back to the refuge and then on to Imlil along the well-trodden path. This challenging day of hiking entails 8 to 9 hours of ascending 900 meters and descending about 2,500 meters to reach Imlil. At 5:00 pm, you’ll be returned to Marrakech, marking the end of your incredible 6-day Berber Villages Trek.

Clothes and Equipments :
Should be dress according to altitude and the environment you will be located in. The most hikers are in high altitude climate in remote area. Therefore, there are often large temperature swings. Temperatures are usually colder at the high altitudes.

Trekking Clothes:

  • Trekking boots or light weight walking shoes.
  • Have comfortable footwear is essential for a good trek.
  • Make sure all footwear is broken in well prior to your trek.
  • Do not break in boots on your trek, a track suit and a pair of track shoes to wear in lodges
  • Two pairs of woolen socks for trekking shoes and track shoes,
  • Warm down jacket and rain proof jacket with hood for protection from rain
  • Warm hat for the cold and sun hat or cap for sunny days
  • A pair of woolen gloves and a pair sandals
  • Cotton T-shirts and pairs of long shorts/skirts
  • Woolen shirts and thick sweaters as well as wind and water proof trousers
  • Pair of light or heavy weight trouser and one light weight long sleeve shirt
  • Pairs of thermal undergarments
